Public Space MOT Movement: Opportunity: Terrain

Through a series of workshops to identify the qualities of public spaces, we have developed a tool to help measure the design quality and fitness for purpose of public squares and central spaces.

As well as providing a numerical test score, our analysis offers clients pointers towards improving the space through better design, functionality or management.

Please contact me if you would like us to arrange an assessment. The tool can be used to assess the likely suitability of designs for new public spaces. Assessments can be carried out as part of a stakeholder consultation process, as a training exercise, or independently. A presentation on the methodology can be found by clicking onto the link:

Analysis of a new Coop store and car park layout in Alsager revealed a potentially weak relationship with the public street because the store was set back behind a car park. Additional development of small shops (pictured) was introduced to help enclose the space and create an attractve link from the street to the store entrance . The sequence of plans shows how the final design provides better access to the store and a better public realm.
